30 Minute Homemade Flour Tortillas Recipe- Sweet Mama's Kitchen

Welcome to your new favorite tortilla-making adventure! I can't tell you how many times I've been in a predicament—last-minute dinner guests or a taco night craving for a soft, fresh tortilla.
The supermarket options often leave much to be desired, filled with preservatives and lacking in flavor. This is where my efficient 30-minute flour tortilla recipe comes into play.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour: This forms the base. You can substitute it with whole wheat if desired.
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder: Adds a bit of fluffiness.
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt: For flavor.
  • 5 tablespoons salted butter can be coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon plain Greek yogurt: This adds moisture and a slight tang.
  • 1 cup hot water: Helps with making the dough pliable.
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder optional

Method

  1. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to the fun part!
Step 1: Combine Dry Ingredients
  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, baking powder, and salt. Whisk them together until they’re well mixed. You want that perfect blend to ensure even flavor distribution.
Step 2: Add Butter
  1. Next, mix in the room-temperature butter (or coconut oil) until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. This step will ensure those delicious layers in your tortilla!
Step 3: Stir in the Yogurt
  1. After mixing in the butter, add the Greek yogurt. This keeps your tortillas nice and soft. Stir to combine it with the flour mixture.
Step 4: Pour in Hot Water
  1. Now it’s time for the hot water. Gradually pour it into the mixture while stirring. The heat will help meld the ingredients together, creating a lovely dough.
Step 5: Knead the Dough
  1. Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it for about 1-2 minutes until it becomes smooth. Don’t over-knead; we want tenderness here.
Step 6: Let Dough Rest
  1. Allow the dough to rest for about 10 minutes. This brief resting period helps the gluten relax, making the tortillas easier to roll out.
Step 7: Divide & Roll
  1. After resting, divide the dough into equal-sized portions, typically around 10. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten with your hands. Using a rolling pin, roll out each ball until it’s about 1/8 inch thick.
Step 8: Cook the Tortillas
  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook each tortilla for about 30 seconds on each side or until golden and puffy. Don’t hesitate to flip them—this gives you those beautiful spots of toasty goodness.
Step 9: Keep Warm
  1. As you finish cooking, keep the tortillas warm in a cloth or tortilla warmer. This retains that delightful softness you crave.

Notes

Making the perfect tortilla can be a piece of cake—or, shall I say, a piece of flatbread? Here are five tips to elevate your tortilla-making game:
  • Use a non-stick skillet: This prevents sticking and allows for even cooking.
  • Don’t skip the resting time: This step is crucial; it’s what keeps tortillas flexible and tender.
  • Keep dough covered: While you’re rolling each tortilla out, keep the remaining dough covered to avoid drying out.
  • Experiment with flavors: Feel free to add spices or herbs to the dough for unique flavor profiles.
Practice makes perfect: Don’t worry if your first few tortillas aren’t perfect circles. Embrace the rustic charm!
