Ingredients

  • 8 ounces of softened cream cheese: This is the heart of your filling. Use a full-fat version for rich flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons finely minced scallions green onion
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil: This brings an essential nutty flavor to the mix.
  • ½ teaspoon roasted garlic powder: This enhances the savory profile of your filling.
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt: Just a pinch to bring all the flavors together.
  • Wonton sheets or wrappers: You’ll need enough to wrap your creamy concoction.

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Filling
  1. Start by taking the softened cream cheese and mixing it in a bowl. It’s important for the cream cheese to be soft to easily blend in the flavors. You can use a fork or spatula for this step.
  2. Then, add in the minced scallions, sesame oil, roasted garlic powder, and sea salt. Stir everything together until it’s well combined. The mixture should be smooth, and every bite will be packed with flavor.
Step 2: Assemble the Wontons
  1. Now comes the fun part—wrapping the wontons! Lay out your wonton wrappers on a clean surface. Place a teaspoon of the cream cheese filling in the center of each wrapper. Be careful not to overfill; a little goes a long way.
  2. To seal the wontons, dampen the edges of each wrapper with a bit of water. Fold the wrapper over the filling to form a triangle, pressing the edges together to keep the filling inside. For an added touch, you can also crimp the edges with a fork for a cute design.
Step 3: Preheat Your Air Fryer
  1. Before you start air frying, preheat your air fryer according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This step helps achieve that coveted golden brown color and ensures an even cook. I typically find a temperature of 375°F (190°C) works perfectly for wontons.
Step 4: Cook the Wontons
  1. Once your air fryer is preheated, lightly spray the basket with cooking spray. Arrange the wontons in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd them. A good amount of space will allow hot air to circulate and create that perfect crispness.
  2. Cook them for about 8 to 10 minutes, flipping them halfway through. Keep an eye on them though; everyone’s air fryer can be a bit different. You're looking for a beautiful golden brown color.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
  1. When those crispy little bites come out, let them cool for a minute so they’re easy to handle. Then grab your dipping sauce of choice and dig in! These wontons are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for a day or two—if they last that long!

Notes

  • Cream Cheese: Cream cheese is essential for the creamy texture. Full-fat versions provide the best flavor and mouthfeel. If you prefer a lighter version, there are low-fat options available.
  • Scallions: They add a fresh taste that cuts through the richness of the cream cheese. They also provide a beautiful pop of color.
  • Sesame Oil: A little goes a long way! This ingredient can be overpowering if overused, but just the right amount enhances the overall flavor.
  • Roasted Garlic Powder: Using roasted garlic powder elicits a mellow, sweet flavor compared to fresh garlic, which can sometimes be sharp.
