Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick-cut Texas toast bread
  • 4 large farm-fresh eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons cane sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch fine sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus extra for serving if desired
  • Maple syrup, for drizzling at serving

Method

Step 1: Preheat the Oven
  1. Start by preheating your oven to 375°F (190°C). This will give it ample time to reach the right temperature for baking while you prep the ingredients.
Step 2: Prepare the Bread
  1. Cut each slice of Texas toast into strips. Aim for about 1-inch wide for perfect dipping and easy eating. Lay the strips on a baking sheet for convenience.
Step 3: Make the Egg Mixture
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cane sugar, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and sea salt. Ensure everything is fully blended and frothy.
Step 4: Dip the Bread
  1. Now comes the fun part! Dip each strip of toast into your egg mixture. Make sure to coat each side. Let any excess mixture drip off before placing them on the baking sheet.
Step 5: Bake
  1. Pour the melted butter over the arranged bread sticks. Bake them in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes, turning them halfway through. They should be golden brown and firm to touch when they’re done.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy!
  1. Once baked, remove the sticks from the oven and let them cool for a minute. Serve warm with maple syrup or your favorite toppings and watch them disappear.

Notes

Use Day-Old Bread: Stale bread absorbs the egg mixture better, preventing sogginess.
Change Up the Spices: Try adding cardamom or pumpkin spice for a different flavor profile.
Top with Fruit: Fresh berries or bananas brighten up the dish and add moisture.
Double the Recipe: Make a larger batch if you’re serving a crowd. They freeze well, too!
Adjust the Sweetness: If you like it sweeter, add an extra tablespoon of sugar or drizzle with honey.
